Advanced Materials Innovative Recycling (AMIR) is a 2-year, 120 ECTS, Master’s program focusing upon recycling and raw material value chain. The master’s program was created in 2017 in collaboration with industry, academia and research organizations. AMIR aims to answer a basic problem faced by the world – how do we transition to a green, circular economy that emits less CO2?

The Master’s program offers students the possibility of obtaining a double diploma; a nationally accredited diploma from each of the two partner universities.
The aim of the program is to educate students to become future experts in a variety of raw materials fields and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, including. The curriculum of the program is designed to deliver several key scientific, technical and business skills to the students, which includes; materials processing and properties, recycling, material chain optimization, services for circular economy, intellectual property, research ethics, scientific communication and product design.
The first year of the AMIR program takes place at either the University of Bordeaux or at NOVA University Lisbon. Students learn about materials, recycling and entrepreneurship (general chemistry, material science, lifecycle of materials), sustainability, intellectual transformation, value judgments (ethical, scientific and sustainability challenges), creativity, innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship. In the second year, student gets to enroll at a partner university, the third semester involves study at a partner institution which is followed by industrial internship (15 ECTS) and Master thesis (15 ECTS). The 4 partner universities offer different specialization modules; TU Darmstadt: Material design for recycling, Polytechnic University of Madrid: Mineral recycling for construction and other sectors, University of Liège: Metallurgy and metals recycling, University of Miskolc: Polymers, hybrids and composite recycling.
After the successful completion of the Master’s program the graduates will be able to take a role in a recycling sector industry while working in Process optimization, Materials design, Recycling plant management, EIA, R&D, Plant administration, Project administration, Waste management or pursue a PhD degree and work in academia.
Relevant bachelor degree in Engineering or Environmental Sciences with advanced knowledge in Chemistry is required. Candidates with undergraduate degrees in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials science are also eligible.
Selection criteria is based on several factors including; previous academic background, motivation, language proficiency, work experience in a relevant sector and entrepreneurial potential.
Fee and Scholarships
The fee for AMIR program is 2000€/year for EU students and 4000€/year for non-EU students. The scholarship opportunities in this program includes EIT and FIDEX scholarships. The EIT labelled scholarships provide students with € 13,500 as cost of living expenses in the second and third semesters. FIDEX scholarships are merit based (grades obtained in exams) and is offered to excellent candidates enrolled at University of Bordeaux. FIDEX scholarship act as a top-up to EIT scholarships and provides €750 per month for a total of 9 months in their second year, non-EU students get a travel bonus of €750.
